Abstract/Summary:
The thesis examines the Canadian political economy literature as it has attempted to take account of communication and cultural industries, the history of the Canadian recording industry within the global recording industry, and Canadian government policies and programs pertaining to the industry. The review of political economy finds that the Canadian recording industry has been a neglected area of inquiry. The historical examination demonstrates the influence of foreign conglomerates on the structure and profit flows of the Canadian industry. The review of government activity shows a lack of attention towards industry needs, and an overall policy strategy which reinforces structural inequities. The theme is developed over four chapters: introduction, the history of the Canadian recording industry in a global context, government programs and policies, and concluding arguments. The author concludes that a combination of government inaction, the free trade deals, and industry indifference leaves the Canadian recording industry barely Canadian.
