Abstract/Summary:
The original structure of the seven-factor model of magical thinking was tested based on data from 561 participants from an ethnically diverse university campus. Upon conducting a confirmatory factor analysis, the original seven-factor model was found to be an extremely poor fit, and new models were tested. Tested models were built on a theoretical basis initially using the seven-factor model after which alterations were made to the initial model through literature-based modifications to the subscales in ways that would allow for similar items to combine into one factor. Multiple six-factor, and five-factor correlated and uncorrelated models were tested, as well as a four-factor and a three-factor model. The new model presented is a four-factor model that is more encompassing of paranormal belief as defined by Tobacyk.
