Since mankind entered the 21st century, science and technology, culture and living standards have made a qualitative leap.People's attitudes towards life are also gradually changing, from the past pursuit of adequate food and clothing to today's emphasis on harmonious nature and sustainable development. Therefore,in order to meet the needs of people's production and living, the lighting field is also constantly innovating. As a result,LED has become a mainstay in daily lighting applications due to its low energy consumption, high light efficiency, and long life. However, compared with traditional light source,it is more stringent to the LED's optical system adaptation because of its Lambert luminescence. Therefore, designing an optical system that enables LED to function efficiently has become an important issue that needs to be solved in the lighting industry.People's continuous research on illumination optics has gradually established the theory of non-imaging optics, and proposed a series of optical system design methods.Based on the theory of non-imaging optics and some existing traditional design methods, this paper proposes a free-form surface design method based on (?)tendue filling, which aims to cover the shortage of traditional design methods to improve the accuracy of lighting systems.First, this article briefly introduces the history and application prospects of LED,and introduces the basic concepts of non-imaging optics in detail combined with its extensive application in the lighting industry, which includes the elaboration of related concepts such as (?)tendue and edge light. And we also prove the conservation law of (?)tendue and the principle of edge rays by formula. It also describes two very important laws in non-imaging optics in detail: the appropriate form of Snell's law and the law of conservation of energy. On this basis, the common design methods of non-imaging optics are introduced, and the advantages and disadvantages of these design methods are discussed and compared, and also introduced a method of free-form surface design from many aspects in detail which is based on (?)tendue filling. Then, using computer program simulation,3D modeling, and light simulation to verify the feasibility of this method and to discuss whether there is room for optimization. Finally, according to the final actual results and some problems encountered in the research process, the shortcomings in the method and possible solutions are analyzed, and the future development prospects and some feasible improvement measures are discussed in combination with the current application environment.
