With the progress of science and technology and climate change, the development of Arctic resources and the opening of Arctic routes have become the focus of competition and cooperation among countries in the world. As a special material, ice plate features complex physical and mechanical properties, and its mechanical properties are also affected by environmental factors in the formation process. There are many unexpected situations in the Arctic, which are more common in the process of sailing. In this case,it is of great significance to study vertical ice breaking, which is a new ice breaking method. In this paper, the vertical ice breaking problem is studied by experiment, finite element method and DEM-CFD coupling method. We hope to provide support for the further study of mechanical problems in polar development.Firstly, the series summation of the theoretical solution of the elastic thin plate bending equation is carried out by using the programming software, and the relationship between the deflection, stress and load is obtained, which provides a theoretical basis for the analysis and calculation of the experimental results. Then the indoor experiments of saltwater ice floating and ice breaking are carried out,and the phenomena and loads in the experiments are analyzed respectively. Then, according to the ice parameters measured by cantilever beam experiment, the deflection and load relation formula are used to solve the deflection of floating and pressing ice breaking, and compared with the deflection measured by experiment. Then, the finite element method is used to analyze the ice breaking process of the cylinder floating without water. The results are compared with the existing research and experiments to verify the feasibility of the finite element method to simulate the ice breaking problem. Then, the three important factors that affect the load are analyzed:ice thickness, cylinder diameter and cylinder speed. The influence of the three factors on the load is analyzed. Finally, the DEM-CFD coupling method is used to analyze the ice breaking process of the cylinder under the condition of water.Compared with the existing research, the feasibility of DEM-CFD coupling method to simulate the vertical ice breaking problem is verified, and the process of the cylinder under the condition of water is analyzed.
