Plant-derived biogenic volatile organic compounds(BVOCs),which are important substances for plant growth, reproduction and defense, are an important part of the global carbon cycle and have potential impacts on global changes and carbon cycles.Studying the release characteristics of BVOCs is of great scientific significance clarifying the physiological and ecological functions of BVOCs and their contribution to the global carbon cycle. However, most studies on BVOCs have focused on a relatively small number of well-known taxa form terestreal ecosystems, especially for trees, little known is about the main BVOCs released by aquatic plants. In this study,we detected main BVOCs(the first 50 bigh-concentration mass spectrum peaks)released by collected 34 common aquatic plants using the solid phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique. Also we compared the released main BVOCs among different life forms and phylogeny, and between under dark treatment and natural light. The main results are as follows:(1)A total of 70 main volatile organic compounds released by 34 common aquatic plants under natural condition were detected.According to the chemical structure, alcohols and olefins were the main BVOCs released by common aquatic plants, which accounting for 35.71% and15.71% of the total released BVOCs;(2)There were significant difference in the main BVOCs between produced and BVOCs released by common macrophytes. The main BVOCs produced by aquatic plant were aldehyde and the main BVOCs released by macrophytes are alcohol;(3)The were obvious differences in main released BVOCs among different life forms and evolution levels. For BVOCs released from different life from, submerged plants and emergent plants release more volatile organic compounds than floating plants and floating leaf plants. For the number of BVOCs released by aquatic plants belongde to charophyte, pteridophyta, dicotyledon and monocotyledon, monocotyledonous macrophytes ranked first, followed by dicotyledon, charophyte, and pteridophyta.(4)The life form of aquatic plants, rathern than evolution level, significantly affected the release ratio of main BVOCs Among different life from, significant differences in the release ratio of main BVOCs were found be between submerged plants and emergent plants, and between floating leaf plants and emergent plants.(5)There were 45 kinds of BVOCs released by 34 macrophytes in both natural light and dark treatments, and alcohol was the major constituents.25 kinds of BVOCs only released from 34 macrophytes under natural light condition, and the major components were alcohol and olefin.Also,18 kinds of BVOCs were only detected from 34 macrophytes under dark treatment, and aldehyde was the main compound. Our results have shown that there were significant different in the main BVOCs released by aquatic plants and terrestrial plants..Therefore,the research on aquatic plant-derived BVOCs will add new knowledge to the understanding of BVOCs,and also provide important infromation for the research of effects of BVOCs releasd by macrophytes on the global carbon cycle and regional atmospheric environmental quality. Also, further research is needed to investigate the release flux and its ecological significance of BVOCs released by aquatic plant.
