The study area experienced a series of tectonic events including the Gondwana continental depression, intracontinental rift, the continental rift of the Australian and the compression and collision of the Australian plate, the Pacific plate, and the Eurasian plate. It?s divided into four tectonic evolution stages. In view of the attributes of the Bonaparte basin and its surrounding basins, the dynamic background of basin formation, the geotectonic position of the basin and the main stages of basin formation in the east Indonesia-Papua New Guinea area,According to the basic basin pattern in the basin setting period, the basin types were divided into three types.Through the comparative analysis of the basin-forming process of Bonaparte basin and the surrounding basin,At each of the four stages of tectonic evolution, there were corresponding organic rich mud shale deposits, which became the source rocks of the basin after later thermal evolution. In terms of tectonic environment, the source rocks were mainly formed in the continental rift stage and passive continental margin stage; In terms of sedimentary sequence, they were mainly Carboniferous,Permian and Jurassic-Cretaceous.Based on the study of the basin-forming process, the regional sedimentary environment evolution map was compiled, which revealed the evolution process of the sedimentary environment since the Jurassic period. In terms of the distribution of oil and gas resources,by comparing the vertica l distribution of source rocks and oil and gas resources in the basin,it was found that since the Oligocene, the compressional collision caused by the subduction of the Pacific plate and the northward drift of the Australian plate had an important impact on the re-migration of oil and gas resources, especially in the North Seram basin. In addition, based on the 2D seismic line density and exploration well density of the basins, the exploration degree of the basins were analyzed, and the overall exploration degree of the study area was found to be low.In terms of the potential for oil and gas resources,on the one hand,by means of quantitative evaluation of the resource potential in the study area for the basin optimization support deepening and conventional oil and gas resources exploration. On the other hand, based on the geological knowledge obtained from the basin anatomical and regional analysis, the future exploration direction of unconventional oil and gas resources is predicted.
