A Study Of Verbeek's Philosophy Of Technology

Dutch philosopher Peter-Paul Verbeek's philosophy of technology has received wide attention in the current field of technology ethics.Starting from the internalism approach of technical ethics,he holds that technology can play a moderating role in the relationship between human moral cognition and behavior,and that moral subject is composed of technological artifacts and human beings,this paper puts forward that the technology artifact contains moral code,that is,“Technology moralization”,and materializes the specific moral code into the technology artifact by means of technology design.Technological artifacts are elevated to the status of human beings and fall into the problem of “Technocracy”,and Verbeek also proposes an expansionary construction of technological assessment to ensure technological democracy.Technology plays a profound intermediary role in human experience and practice.Design should be accompanied by the development of technology,and technology has become the best companion for people to advance towards “Good Life”.Verbeek's philosophy of technology has deep ideological origins.He draws on the classical philosophy of technology for the discussion of technology,Ihde's postphenomenological philosophy of technology for the relationship between man and technology in four forms,quoted Latour and Borgman for the subject of the study,this paper analyzes the moderating role of technological artifacts in the context of use,puts forward the theory of technological intermediary,and then develops the theory of moral materialization.Verbeek emphasizes that we should take technology seriously and respect its role and moral initiative.He hopes to moralized people by moralizing technology and realize the harmonious development between people and technology.The intention and freedom of the technological artifact in the thought of Verbeek and his moral agency force him into a new dilemma of the dichotomy of subject and object.At the same time,his thought inherits and deepens the empirical and ethical turn studied by philosophy of Technology,opens the third turn of philosophy of technology towards “Things”,and breaks through the limitation of the humanistic view of classical ethics.It is decided to attach importance to the status of technological artifacts in the ethics of Technology,which provides a new theoretical framework for the ethics of technology from the point of view of technology design and builds up a realizable theoretical support for the development of modern technology.
