With the new round of education reform, statistical knowledge as a carrier of data analysis literacy has been re-raised to a higher position by the national education department. In addition, the mathematics gifted students who performed well in the International Mathematical Olympiad(IMO)have aroused widespread attention in the society and mathematics education circles. This study focuses on the investigation of the mathematics gifted students' ability to solve statistical problems.According to the SOLO classification evaluation system and the error classification theory, the ability of high school mathematics gifted students to solve statistical problems is classified and their errors in the test are evaluated.we provide an in-depth analysis of students' ability to solve statistical problems and major errors. In this study, the ability of mathematics gifted students in senior high school to solve statistical problems is investigated by means of test paper and interview. The research questions include statistical solving ability, major errors and emotional attitudes of mathematics gifted students in senior high school. The test subjects include 51 grade two students from a key middle school in Shanghai and a key middle school in Zhejiang. Two teachers and two students are interviewed. The collected data are sorted out and analyzed to obtain the research results and we give corresponding teaching suggestions. The results of the study find that: 1.The statistical problem-solving ability of high school mathematics gifted students is generally at an upper-middle level.More than 60% of these students are at the R level and about 8% are at the E level.2.The errors in statistical problem solving of high school mathematics gifted students are mainly knowledge errors and logical errors.Knowledge errors account for 41.5%,and logical errors account for 37.8%.The errors are mainly concentrated in the answers to open-ended questions, such as incomprehensible explanations and irregular expressions.3.High school mathematics gifted students are more motivated to learn statistical knowledge.74.5% of the students are interested in statistical knowledge, and 92.2% of the students feel that statistical knowledge will be helpful to their future life.Based on the interviews and the above research results, the author puts forward the following teaching suggestions: 1.Collect data based on activities to stimulate students' curiosity.2.Conduct special training for open-ended problems.3.Carry out lectures on statistical knowledge to improve teachers' statistical professional ability.4.Include statistical knowledge in the selection of gifted students.
