Perylene diimide(PDI)is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a large?-?conjugate structure.PDI derivatives can be categorized as fluorescent dyes with strong emission and high photostability.PDI derivatives exhibit strong absorption in the visible region, high fluorescence quantum yield, adjustable photoelectric properties and excellent chemical stability. Therefore, they are promising candidates in fluorescent probes, organic solar cells,OFETs,OLEDs and dye lasers.Although PDI derivatives have been applied in various fields, their applications were limited owing to its poor solubility and quenching of aggregate fluorescence.Nevertheless, over the past years, various methods have been developed to modify the PDI derivatives and enhance their performance in different fields. In this dissertation,a novel fluorescent probe(PTCT-DMAC)based on perylene diimide, attached with four cationic surfactants is fabricated and synthesized through ionic self-assembly(ISA)strategy for the detection of cupric ions in aqueous solution. The molecular structure of the product was confirmed by 1H NMR and photophysical properties of the fluorescent probe were investigated by photoluminescence spectra and UV-Vis absorption spectra. The PTCT-DMAC complex is composed of 1,6,7,12-tetrachloro-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride(PTCDA)and N,N-dihexadecyl-N-methyl hexadecan-1-aminium chloride(DMAC),which has an improved emission property. The fluorescence emission of the synthesized complex can be selectively and sensitively quenched by Cu2+ions owing to the assembly of perylene. The results show that the selective, sensitive and fast recognition of Cu2+ions can be recognized by a turn off fluorescent response.PTCT-DMAC is a potential candidate for fluorescent probe owing to the greater performance to Cu2+ions and improved emission property. In addition,a novel fluorescent probe for fluoride ion based on PDI attached with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS)nanocages at the nitrogen imide region and a special acetamide group at the bay region of the aromatic perylene core(POSS-AMPDI)has been designed and synthesized.Fluoride ion is classified as an ion with high electronegativity, small radius and it has widely found applications in various aspects of life including health and environmental issues.Deficiency of fluoride ions or excessive concentrations of fluoride ions can cause an adverse impact to health and environment and therefore it is crucial to design fluorescent probes. The spectral results showed that POSS-AMPDI is highly selective and sensitive toward fluoride ions over other ions with a detection limit as low as 1.64×10-8 M.
