Study On Properties Of CrAlN-based Hard Composite Coatings Deposited By Multi-arc Ion Plating

Compared with traditional CrN binary coating,CrWN coating has higher hardness and better wear resistance,and CrAlN coating has better oxidation resistance and high temperature resistance.Scholars deposited quaternary CrAlVN and CrAlSiN coatings on the basis of CrAlN coating,aiming to further improve their mechanical properties and friction and wear properties.The properties and service life of coatings can be improved by increasing their adhesive strength.However,studies on the methods of improving the adhesive strength of CrWN,CrAlVN and CrAlSiN coatings are limited.Moreover,the effects of parameters of multi-arc ion plating on the structure and performance of CrAlVN and CrAlSiN coatings have been rarely reported until present.In this study,we deposited Cr/CrN/CrWN coating by multi-arc ion plating,the influence of CrN transition layer's thickness on the structure and performance of Cr/CrN/CrWN coating were examined,and then proposed the optimized process of transition layer's deposition.Based on this process,Cr/CrN/CrAlVN and Cr/CrN/CrAlSiN coatings were deposited,and the influence of processing parameters on their structure and performance was systematically studied.Finally,the differences of friction and wear properties between CrAlVN,CrAlSiN and CrAlN coatings were analyzed.The results are as follows:(1)Cr/CrN/CrWN coating shows face-centered cubic structure.W atoms replace Cratoms,forming(Cr,W)N substitutional solid solution.Under the condition of bias of 80 V,target current of 100 A,and deposition pressure of 1.0 Pa,when Crlayer is deposited for 2min and CrN layer is deposited for 40 min,the hardness of Cr/CrN/CrWN coating can reach2033 HV,and the adhesive strength is up to 126 N.So that the adhesive strength of CrWN coating is significantly improved accompanied by the hard characteristic.(2)At different bias and pressure,Cr/CrN/CrAlVN coatings are mainly crystallized in form of face-centered cubic,accompanied by pure V diffraction peaks.The increase of deposition pressure significantly reduces the content of V phase.After comprehensive analysis of the influence of bias and pressure on structure and performance,it is concluded that Cr/CrN/CrAlVN coatings deposited at 50 V and 1.0 Pa show best properties,whose average friction coefficient is 0.423,showing good anti-friction performance,the wear rate is as low as 6.57×10-7mm3/N·M,and the adhesive strength is up to 85 N.(3)Cr/CrN/CrAlSiN coatings are also crystallized in form of face-centered cubic.Sielement is mainly combined with N forming amorphous Si3N4.After comprehensive analysis of the influence of bias and deposition pressure on structure and performance,it is concluded that under the condition of 50 V and 1.0 Pa,the hardness of the coating is as high as 2749 HV,the wear rate is 5.65×10-7 mm3/N·m,and the adhesive strength is 71 N,which are the best property of Cr/CrN/CrAlSiN coating.(4)Both V and Sielements improve the wear resistance of CrAlN coating to different degrees.Under the best processing parameters,CrAlVN coating has the lowest average friction coefficient and good anti-friction performance;CrAlSiN coating's wear rate is about51%lower than that of CrAlN coating,showing better wear resistance.Therefore,if there is a higher demand for anti-friction lubrication,CrAlVN coating can be selected.If there is a higher demand for wear resistance,CrAlSiN coating is a better choice.
