In mountainous cities with undulating topography and large spatial elevation changes,a three-dimensional pedestrian road network connected by stairways and a flat motor vehicle road network connected by planes, slopes are gradually formed. As the main carrier of connecting different elevation planes in a city, the road network is important in carrying out urban transportation activities. To further clarify the development characteristics of stairways, road network and their connectivity values in the mountainous city, this paper takes Nagasaki City in Japan as a research area.Based on GIS and Space Syntax,it divides the analysis into two aspects:Historical evolution pattern of stairways,Current accessibility status of stairways. For the historical analysis, this part investigates the spatial evolution of road networks and pedestrian stairways in 1764,1868,and 2020 based on the compilation and analysis of historical maps in Nagasaki city. For the current status analysis,a method for measuring the spatial and temporal accessibility of facilities is established by integrating time dimension and multi-mode traffic. This part focuses on connectivity values of stairways and current transport network in public facility’s service coverage from a spatial and temporal perspective. The facilities’accessibility changes and residents’ travel cost changes under different travel mode choice are calculated, then the traffic utility of stairways is analyzed.Through the above analysis,it is found that stairways are widely distributed in Nagasaki. They evolved with the distribution of town, and evolved into a different role in the current road network.Further Findings indicated that the overall accessibility of current transport network in Nagasaki’s postal, education, park and medical facilities is good.Residential can reach all types of facilities within 15 minutes and 1500 meters via each trip mode.Stairways in current transport network can effectively save time, distance for residents, especially the elderly. In contrast to the condition without stairways,it saves an average distance of 8.05%and time of 7.2%for each residential. The results of this study can provide theoretical support and decision basis for transport network design, facility layout and urban planning in mountainous cities.
