Repurposing electric vehicle(EV)batteries for a "Second Life" in grid-scale energy storage applications has the ability to increase the appeal of these high-quality batteries outside EV service which also lowers the capital cost of grid-scale energy storage.Matching electrical power supply to consumer demand has long been a challenge for electricity delivery network operators, and it is becoming more so as distributed renewable energy production at the low voltage(LV)level grows.A battery energy storage system(BESS)has been proposed to aid in voltage regulation, optimize renewable generation, and meet evening peak demand.Additionally,a BESS may include network ancillary services such as balancing and deferring network asset upgrades, resulting in financial benefits.Until now,the expense of supplying a BESS was prohibitively expensive even for the most remote and critical supplies. This research’s primary contribution would be to show that afterlife electric vehicle(EV)batteries may be used in BESS to provide those facilities, with a focus on peak shaving and upgrade deferral. The BESS size is determined using a simulation of an LV load profile, and the effect on voltage is modeled and graphically depicted.Given that consumer growth of EVs has been limited by the high cost of Li-ion batteries, and given that the first set of used car batteries is expected to become usable in 2019,an inquiry into the afterlife use of EV batteries is both timely and cost effective...
