Wide-area ship detection is one of the key technologies for marine surveillance and plays an important role in the maintenance of state’s marine security and marine rights. At present, the common ship detection technologies based on space-based radar include electronic reconnaissance detection and ship detection based on SAR images.Electronic reconnaissance cannot work when ship’s radio is silent.Ship detection based on SAR images requires imaging of the whole monitoring areas.Due to the sparse distribution of ships on the sea, this method will cause waste of resources and time for the imaging of no-ship sea areas. To avoid the waste, this paper proposes a detect-before-imaging detection technology based on Bayesian approach.Firstly, radar scans sea areas and obtains the target existence probabilities in the monitoring areas.Secondly,SAR images the local areas with high probabilities of ship existence. Finally, the SAR imagery can be used for further processing, such as ship classification. The proposed method can effectively avoid imaging of no-ship areas and then reduce resources consumption and time waste. In this paper,we study the modeling and simulation method of sea clutter firstly, and then choose the appropriate clutter model and simulation method for subsequent research.Secondly, the Bayesian approach is introduced as a basic ship detection tool. The feasibility and generality of Bayesian approach for ship detection are verified by simulation experiments and the detection performance of Bayesian approach is also studied.Based on the ship-existence probability obtained by Bayesian approach,we propose a novel search strategy for ship detection. The search strategy let radar scan the local areas with the highest ship-existence probabilities firstly.Simulation experiments show that the proposed strategy can quickly and effectively determine the target location and has application prospects of wide-area target search. Finally, based on the proposed search strategy and SAR imaging,we propose a detect-before-imaging detection method for wide-area ship detection.By constructing a scene simulation experiment,it is verified that the method can effectively detect targets and image targetexist areas.
