| This master thesis examines the infrastructure construction inside the British Concession of Tianjin(1860—1943).Through a quantitative research on data related to the concession’s history, this thesis aims to clarify the developmental process of its infrastructure construction,in order to provide new perspectives for recognizing the value of its urban historical heritage.First, this thesis elaborates the British Concession’s municipal management system and management institutions.Next, with the help of the spatial analysis tools available in GIS(Geographic Information System),and based on the georeferencing and redrawing of historical maps, the process of infrastructure construction in the British Concession is analyzed from five aspects: land, road, water supply, drainage, and power, with discussions on the strategy of municipal construction under the leadership of the British Ministry of Industry. Then it analyzes the relationship be-tween the infrastructure construction in the British Concession, and the land price distribution driven by the interests of land transactions and real estate development. Finally, through a comparative study of the other concessions and the Chinese Old Town of Tianjin in the same period, the thesis demonstrates and summarizes the main characteristics and positive impacts of the infrastructure construction in the modern British concession. This thesis is based on the current situation of urban planning and construction and the protection of concession heritage. It is hoped that the result of the thesis can provide a new analytical perspective,in order to incorporate the protection and development of concession heritage into the contemporary framework of urban planning. |
