| Population ageing has become a prominent problem facing the economic and social development of many countries and regions in the world. The solution of this problem requires great human efforts. To better satisfy the needs of the aged group,we have conducted long-term and various experiments in the field of elderly service.Among the various forms of elderly services, institutional care has assumed a very important place and played a very important role.As one of the earliest cities of this country to have entered the stage of population ageing,Shanghai has a b etterdeveloped institutional care and has made experiments and accumulated experience in rehabilitative landscaping at elderly care institutions.Rehabilitation landscape can promote the physical and mental health of the elderly and further improve the quality of their life.According to this topic, this paper is divided into the following three parts.Part 1 is research foundation. This part introduces two concepts of rehabilitation landscape and evidence-based design. The development history, research situation at home and abroad and horticulture therapy related to rehabilitation landscape were systematically introduced..We conducted an investigation into the current situation and development trend of the equipments and landscapes in the elderly care institutions and probed into the problems existing in the design and construction of the rehabilitative landscaping at Shanghai elderly care institutions. Then we elaborated on the theories of rehabilitative landscaping from the perspectives of nature-benefitting,social networking and social support theories as well as horticultural sociology and behavioral psychology.Part 2 is empirical research. This part described a qualitative study into the rehabilitative landscaping at 8 i nstitutions in Shanghai.Models were built for rehabilitative landscaping for the independent elderly and dependant and demented elderly respectively and big data used to study the rehabilitative effects of the rehabilitative landscaping.A quantitative study was made of the rehabilitative effects of rehabilitative landscaping on the inter-personal relations of the residents. We classified all the rehabilitative landscaping at our institutions and found 5 most popular types.A further analysis and study of the application scenario and target recipients of the 5 types of rehabilitative landscaping showed that rehabilitative landscaping has a profound influence on the physical and mental health of the residents.Rehabilitative landscaping was also proved to be able to stimulate the self-help potential of the residents and therefore a theoretical support was found for horticultural therapy to be used in dementia intervention.Meanwhile,a behavioral psychology perspective also confirmed the positive role horticultural therapy may play in promoting the interpersonal relations of the elderly and thus their mental well-being.Part 3 is design research.Based on the analysis and research of the above cases, this part is a preliminary report of the types and location selection of rehabilitative landscaping, the selection and layout of plants in rehabilitative landscaping as well as the basic principles and skills in the design of rehabilitative landscaping in Shanghai elderly care institutions using such research methods as literature study, field investigation, interview and evidence-based analysis. In the end, suggestions were given for the future design and construction of rehabilitative landscaping at elderly care institutions. Conclusions of this study:1.The specially-designed rehabilitative landscaping at elderly care institutions have prominent influence upon the physical and mental health of the elderly residents.Continuous and regular horticultural activities gave positive stimuli to the elderly residents both when they are awake and asleep.2.Rehabilitative landscaping and horticultural activities promote inter-personal relations and memory recovery for both the healthy residents and dementia patients.3.Experience-centered rehabilitative landscaping promotes the mental well-being of the residents by heightening their feelings for sentiments, attachments and affection. When interpersonal relations turns back stage, those engaged in horticultural activities reports getting stronger emotional support from such activities, thus exhibiting better mental health. All the data and pictures cited in this thesis were acquired by the author in the field studies conducted from 2014 to 2018.It is the objective of this thesis to make further explorations of the effects and development trend of rehabilitative landscaping in Shanghai elderly care institutions and, through the design of rehabilitative landscaping,to provide more effective intervention and better care for dementia patients so as to improve their life. |
