In recent years, the research of traditional dwellings has gradually expanded from the built buildings to the builders of construction, from the study of objectoriented, etic more than emic,to the study of paying equal attention to the both.As an "architecture without architects",the shape and technology of vernacular dwellings are the local tradition formed by the people in a certain geographical and cultural area in the long-term construction practice. In rural areas, the construction process often relies on the basic unit of social life community, and is completed based on the corresponding human and material resources,so it often has certain universality and consistency in the community.Taking vernacular community as the object of research, this dissertation regards vernacular architecture as the product of spontaneous collective construction activities of the community members. In response to the development trend of traditional residential research from "object" to "people",this dissertation attempts to start from the perspective of "community" and conduct a survey on community, the basic social unit. This dissertation applies the questionnaire survey method into the research of traditional dwellings.Through the dismantling of the construction process of dwellings, the investigation is carried out from the sub level and the overall level,so as to understand the ideal architectural style in the eyes of the local community, and explore the community’s cognition of the local construction tradition as a whole. This dissertation contains five chapters. The first chapter is about introduction, which explains the research background and topic of this dissertation, establishes the research perspective from the community, and clarifies the research object, content and problems. On the basis of combing and summarizing the current research situation, this part puts forward the corresponding technical route, research significance and innovation. The second chapter introduces the relevant background of Naxi dwellings, describes the basic information of traditional Naxi dwellings.Through fieldwork in Naxi area, practice options in each step of the construction process of vernacular dwellings are sorted out, summarizing the five step construction process,22 architectural elements and 76 practice options of Naxi traditional dwellings,so as to lay the foundation for the construction preference investigation of the community. The third chapter selects a typical Naxi community, and then decomposes the community preference into two aspects: the community’s preference for different architectural practice and the community’s attention to different architectural elements. The questionnaire is designed in two steps, according which is in the form of graphical expression.Through random sampling,a survey on the construction preferences of the members is conducted in Ciman village. The fourth chapter is mainly about data processing and analysis. This part further collates and excavates the collected data of the questionnaire. The statistical analysis of the survey results shows that at the level of sub item practice, community members generally prefer the more decorative architectural forms, and they pay attention to natural materials and ethnic identity represented in their dwellings;while at the level of overall elements, when the economic conditions fully meet people’s practical needs for housing, people pay more attention to the characteristics of housing as a symbol and carrier of social and national identity. This dissertation is a study of the community’s subjective cognition of the local construction tradition. The object of the study is "people".It is a preliminary attempt to apply the social survey method to the study of vernacular architecture.Through quantitative research,it verifies and supplements the previous qualitative research, and provides data support for the practice in Naxi rural areas. However, there are some limitations in the scope of this dissertation. For example,in the existing survey,it is found that personal attributes have a certain impact on the construction preference, and differences between the community construction preference and the actual built environment, which are worthy of further study and improvement in the future.
