Urban informality refers to the social and economic activities spontaneously formed by traditional habits and urban residents, without considering urban planning and legal control, and projected in the urban material space, which reacts to the urban space and generates different externalities, both positive and negative. At present,it is generally believed that the negative external effects of urban informality are far greater than the positive external effects in China, which causes “top-down” methods of formal governance such as large-scale demolishing of informal settlements and high-pressure control of informal commercial spaces, ignoring the “bottom-up” daily needs of informal space users and destroying the diversity of space utilization. However, for cities, formality can not fill in for informal positive externalities. To deal with informal governance,we should explore more reasonable inclusive strategies from the point of seeking advantages and avoiding disadvantages. The surrounding area of the ancient city is a transitional zone between the ancient and the outside of which.Combined with relevant sample researches, informality is particularly common in the surrounding area of cultural tourism-type ancient cities.Out of the urgent needs of heritage preservation and tourism development,as well as the planning reality of urban renewal and governance, how to actively face the urban informality has become a top priority. However,in the existing research results, the attention to the informality of cities around the ancient city is far from enough. The ancient city of Jingzhou is time-honored and the city walls are intact. The functional spaces inside and outside the city are closely related. The functional spaces in the surrounding area of the ancient city are diversified and mixed, with multiple characteristics such as history and modernity, urban and rural, and obvious informality. Therefore, the ancient city of Jingzhou is a typical spatial sample of informal research in the surrounding area of the ancient cities. This thesis selects the surrounding area of Jingzhou Ancient City as the object of study, introduces the urban informality research from the urban core area to the urban peripheral area, and expands the spatial field of informal research, interprets the types of space formation in-depth,proposes a method for precise identification of informal spaces, and innovatively constructs an evaluation system of informal spatial characteristics and external effects, and then combined with the empirical evidence, explores the characteristic value, core issues, spatial governance objectives and strategies of the informal area around the ancient city. This paper is purposed to provide useful supplements to urban informal research, and at the same time provides a new spatial development and governance ideas for Jingzhou and similar ancient cities.
