With the rapid development of intelligent autonomous driving technologies such as high-precision positioning,environmental perception,motion planning and controlling,and the vehicles-to-everything technoogies,the driving performance of autonomous vehicles has been rapidly improved and gradually evolving towards commercialization.However,there is still a lack of relevant research in the field of Human-Machine Interface(HMI)design outside the autonomous vehicle that can improve the road interactive behavior of autonomous vehicles and other road users(such as pedestrians).This paper aimed to build a HMI dictionary set outside the autonomous vehicle based on road interactive behavior as a design tool to provide supports for avoiding traffic conflicts in the road communication and forming a good human-machine relationship.First of all,the interaction between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians is inseparable from the basic road scene.Based on the related theoretical research in different disciplines,this paper proposed a definition of road interaction between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians.With this definition,this paper proposed four road interactive behaviors of autonomous vehicles and pedestrians,and conducted an overall research on their influencing factors.Based on these behaviour types and their influencing factors,a road interaction framework of autonomous vehicles and pedestrians was constructed.Secondly,the HMI outside the autonomous vehicle is an important factor in road interaction.With the current types and characteristics of HMIs outside the autonomous vehicle,this paper constructed a design framework of HMI outside the autonomous vehicle,and discusses the meanings and functions of each element in this framework in detail.Due to the lack of standardized design evaluation elements in the field,the design evaluation elements of the HMI outside the autonomous vehicle were proposed.Next,this paper integrated the road interaction framework of autonomous vehicles and pedestrians、design framework and design evaluation elements of HMI outside the autonomous vehicle,proposed a framework of HMI dictionary set outside the autonomous vehicle based on road interactive behavior,and builds the dictionary set through case collection and analysis.An empirical research was carried out in the scene of mixed traffic with people and vehicles.Finally,through the preliminary observations of road behaviors in the interactin between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians,combined with relevant cases in the dictionary set as analysis materials,a HMI design of head-on obstacle situation in the mixed traffic scene was completed.In summary,this research has constructed an HMI dictionary set outside the autonomous vehicle based on road interactive behavior,which expands the breadth and depth of research and practice on the design of HMI outside the autonomous vehicle.And this HMI dictionary set is useful for the performance improvement where autonomous vehicles operate in complex environments.
