With the development of aerospace technology and the continuous improvement of aircraft equipment, the information in the cockpit is becoming increasingly complex.Head-Up Display(HUD)is becoming a more adaptable method in order to reduce the mental workload of pilots during flight.HUD plays a vital role during the flight. It helps pilots to obtain information more quickly and conveniently by Displaying information in the pilot’s head-up position. At the same time, due to the great freedom of the amount of information presented by the HUD,the HUD can easily become a large information space with ecological imbalance, which will affect the cognition of pilots. In addition, flying is a continuous and extremely difficult process, and it is difficult to study the driving process in a real environment. In order to improve the reliability of the experiment, this article discusses the impact of the amount of information presented by the HUD on the pilot’s cognition in a simulated flight environment.Firstly, this article analyzes and sorts out the framework structure and operating logic of Flightgear software, and analyzes the structure and parsing method of the XML configuration file and the HUD system in Flightgear in detail, which provides a theoretical and practical basis for the development of the subsequent system. In terms of HUD reliability research, this article explores the effects of information acquisition methods, amount of information and work experience on pilots’ mental workload through experiments. The effectiveness of HUD assisted driving in the simulated flight environment and the sufficiency of HUD information are also discussed. The experimental results found that during the flight,a wealth of flight experience can effectively help reduce the pilot’s mental workload. In addition, the results also find that HUD can help improve the cognitive efficiency of pilots and help reduce the mental workload during flight. When the HUD presents a sufficient amount of Task information, the reduction in mental workload become most significant. Therefore,in order to achieve a better HUD assistance effect,it is necessary to ensure that the HUD can provide sufficient information during the flight. In terms of flight Task analysis, this article first uses the Concur Task Tree method to analyze and model the flight process, then sorts out all the information needed in the flight process, and re-plans and design the Display style of each information element.A set of constant Display HUD and a set of time-locked Display HUD were designed and realized by Flightgear based on different information redundancy. Finally,in order to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the time-locked Display HUD and the constant Display HUD during the long-term flight,a three-factor experiment is designed to explore the influence of the redundancy of HUD information, flight mission stage and flight duration on pilots’ mental workload. The result shows that the time-locked Display HUD system can better help the flight, especially in the flight phase with small information demand, which means that the less the redundancy of the information in the HUD interface, the better the effect of assisting the flight.
