The body is the basis for all experiences of interaction with the outside world since it is an objective being that is born and remains with us throughout our lives, and it is via the body that human interaction with the outside world is managed. Its impact cannot be underestimated because it is the organ that conducts activities, produces sensations, and ultimately develops perceptions.By focusing on the embodiment of body consciousness and its use in architecture, the creation of architecture can be liberated from the constraints of abstract function, visual centricity, and technological supremacy, highlighting the human values, humanistic concerns, and regional cultural characteristics of architecture, and realising architectural cultural care for the body and mind of its users.Architecture began as a means of providing shelter for the body.People used to dwell in caves and nests in order to escape the chance of external influences harming their bodies. The evolution of the body in architecture is also reflected in the history of Western architecture. The desire for perfect bodily proportions in ancient Greek society was vividly expressed in the male body’s power in the Doric column and the female body’s tenderness in the Ionic column.Following mediaeval theology’s confinement and restriction of the body, the Renaissance rediscovered the beauty of the body, and architecture sought the same harmonious aesthetics as the perfect body.Faced with the problems of housing, transporting, working, and resting large numbers of people in the early stages of industrialisation,as well as the devastation of two world wars, the physical satisfaction of the body became the most urgent task for architecture and cities, and the rational, standardised nature of modern architecture met the need for mass construction.Of course, architects like Le Corbusier paid attention to the more complex needs of the body in some of his classic architectural works, such as his concept of the modulus and the design concept of the strolling building, which is a good example of the temporal and spatial connection between the body in motion and architecture. After WWII,when modernist architecture was increasingly criticised and disappeared from history, the globalised economy and culture,as well as the growth of information technology, created a new environment for architecture to exist.Since the 1960 s,phenomenology of architecture, drawn from phenomenology and human geography, has progressively developed, with its emphasis on body awareness, the study of perceptual systems, and the emphasis on local experience, infusing new energy into the development of architecture. Its concentration on body consciousness, the study of perceptual systems, and the emphasis on local sensations have given architecture fresh life.Based on this research foundation, this study seeks to utilise relevant architectural phenomenology theories, particularly research findings on body perception,to critically evaluate the problem of modern architecture focusing too much on visual stimuli and neglecting the body. The study is divided into three parts: describing the numerous expressions of the phenomenon of visual centrism, critically analysing these manifestations, and addressing how bodily consciousness intervenes in design as a strategy.According to the paper, the phenomenon of visual centrism in architecture is primarily manifested in the following aspects: the primacy of visual effects in building external shape, the dilution of the sense of place in the built environment, the lack of perception of architectural space, and the shallowness of urban consciousness in the design of architectural monoliths. The fundamental explanations for these occurrences, according to theoretical and practical study, are the compression of time and space generated by global financial flows and the repression of regional culture caused by the globalisation of modern architecture. The reasons for these phenomena represent capital’s control over the human body’s nature, the replacement of the concrete and heterogeneous body with the standardised abstract body, and the neglect of the whole of the tactile, olfactory, auditory, and perceptual systems.Based on the foregoing analysis, this article proposes a design concept centred on body consciousness, arguing that architecture should serve a concrete rather than an abstract, regional rather than global, and individual rather than standardised body,To be precise, architecture must present not only an exaggerated and fashionable external visual image, but also a spatial atmosphere capable of mobilising all of the user’s sensory systems,a space that enables him or her to live poetically.Only in this way can architecture fulfil its fundamental attribute as an existence, and people can live poetically.
