Phellodendron chinense Schneid(known as “huang-bai”)is a deciduous tree of Phellodendron amurense Rupr.in Rutaceae and is the min source plant of “chuan huang-bai”.Its phloem is used as medicine, which has the effects of heat clearing, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.With the increasing demand of P.chinensis Schneid, artificial planting of P.chinensis Schneid has become the only way to solve the market demand and realize the sustainable development and utilization of wild resources. The effective ingredients are closely related to the genuine nature of Chinese medicine, which is a comprehensive standard to evaluate the quality of medicinal materials in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine.Previous studies showed that the alkaloid contents in P.chinensis Schneid from different habitats were quite different, and the soil type in the producing area was the key ecological factor for the growth and development, yield and quality of genuine Chinese medicinal materials. Therefore, this paper studied the growth, nutrient accumulation and distribution characteristics of P.chinensis Schneid under four soil types: acid purple soil, alkaline purple soil, yellow soil and red soil, and revealed the relationship between seedling growth, element accumulation and distribution and soil types,so as to provide a reference for selecting suitable soil types and expanding the planting range of P.chinensis Schneid.Therefore,P.chinensis Schneid seedling was used as research materials, and pot experiment was conducted to study the growth, nutrient accumulation and distribution characteristics of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings under four soil types of acid purple soil, alkaline purple soil, yellow soil and red soil, and to reveal the relationship between seedling growth, element accumulation and distribution and soil types,so as to provide scientific basis for selecting suitable soil types and expanding the planting range of P.chinensis Schneid. The results showed that soil types and organs had significant effects on biomass, contents and distribution of C,N,P,K and other elements in P.chinensis Schneid seedling.Especially,It was significantly higher in leaves than in stems and roots. The biomass of P.chinensis Schneid seedling in acid purple soil which was the highest of 20.51 ± 0.26 g was significantly higher than that in other soils, and the root biomass was significantly lower than that in yellow soil. The biomass and C,N,P and Ca contents of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings were the highest in acid purple soil,K content was the highest in yellow soil,Mg content was the highest in red soil, and biomass was the lowest in alkaline purple soil. The C/N and C/P ratios of leaves were significantly lower than those of stems and roots.Under different soil types, the N/P ratio of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings was less than the critical value of woody plants N/P ratio of 15,the highest was 1.65.The results showed that the contents and distribution of C,N,P,K and other elements in different organs of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings were closely related to the soil types. In the soil with low nutrient level,P.chinensis Schneid distributed more nutrients to roots so as to absorb more nutrients.Acid purple soil was the most suitable soil for the growth of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings, which was conducive to the accumulation of biomass and C,N,P,Ca content, and alkaline purple soil was not suitable for the growth of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings. The growth rate and metabolism of leaves of P.chinensis Schneid were faster than those of stems and roots at seedling stage.N is a limiting element for the growth and development of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings. In conclusion, the seedlings of P.chinensis Schneid should be cultivated in loose and fertile neutral to slightly acidic sandy loam similar to acid purple soil, while compound element fertilizer can be applied to other types of soil to adjust the composition of soil nutrient elements and improve the growth, accumulation and distribution characteristics of P.chinensis Schneid seedlings.
