Since the reform and opening up in 1978,China’s economy has developed rapidly, and has leapt from a poor country to the world’s second largest economy, realizing the "miracle of growth" that has attracted worldwide attention.Residents’ incomes have been continuously improved and their material lives have been satisfied. However, the happiness of residents has not been constantly improved, resulting in a "paradox of happiness." How to improve happiness is the focus of people’s attention at present. The party and the government have put forward many times in important meetings and reports to improve the happiness of residents. So how do you improve your happiness? It is important to consider the concerns of the residents that are closely related to their interests. In the daily life of residents, medical problems have been one of the most concerned issues for residents. In recent years, the expenditure of residents in medical care has increased year by year, and the medical burden of residents has become more and more heavy, which has affected the residents’ feelings of life.Social insurance plays an important role in income redistribution and risk prevention, which is closely related to the welfare of residents themselves. So can social security improve happiness? Can the impact of excessive medical burden on residents be alleviated? These are particularly striking. In view of this, this paper first studies the relationship between social insurance and happiness, and then introduces medical burden variables to explore whether social insurance can alleviate the adverse effects of medical burden on residents’ happiness. In addition, considering that our country is a large agricultural country and farmers are the majority of our residents, this paper puts the research object in the peasant group. In this paper, using the 2017 China Household Finance Survey data(CHFS2017),the Ordered Probit model and OLS model are established for regression analysis. This paper first studies the impact of rural social insurance(social endowment insurance, social medical insurance)on farmers’ subjective well-being,and then introduces medical burden variables to explore whether rural social insurance(social endowment insurance, social medical insurance)can reduce the adverse impact of medical burden on well-being.The results show that social pension insurance and social medical insurance can significantly improve the subjective well-being of farmers, and the more types of insurance they participate in,the stronger the promotion effect.Among them, social endowment insurance can improve happiness by 8%,social health insurance can increase happiness by 9%,and both can participate in 14%.In addition, social endowment insurance and social medical insurance can alleviate the adverse effects of excessive medical burden on farmers’ happiness, and the more types of insurance they participate in,the more obvious the mitigation effect.Specifically, the probability of obtaining social endowment insurance increased by a standard deviation, the negative impact of absolute medical burden on farmers’ subjective well-being decreased by 1%,the probability of obtaining social medical insurance increased by a standard deviation, and the negative impact of absolute medical burden on farmers’ subjective well-being decreased by 1%.Further analysis shows that the promotion and mitigation of social insurance is more obvious and strong in the high-income group, the group under the age of 60 and the eastern region, that is to say,the effect of social insurance on the strong group is greater.According to the previous research, the author believes that social insurance should be further adjusted and improved with the needs of economic development. The specific suggestions are as follows: first,we should improve the coverage of social insurance and achieve universal participation.Second, keep the medical price in a reasonable range and control the unreasonable rise in medical prices.Third,we should improve the level of social security and give greater policy support to low-income groups in rural areas and groups of the elderly.Fourth, the central government should give more economic support to the central and western regions and increase investment in medical resources in the central and western regions.
