Objective To investigate the association between acute lower respiratory infection(ALRI),including pneumonia and bronchiolitis, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration. And the association between ALRI and Fok1,Bsm1,Taq1 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNP)in vitamin D receptor(VDR)gene. Methods Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and Fok1,Bsm1,Taq1 of VDR gene were measured in patients aged between 28 days to 12 months admitted to Shanghai Children’s Medical Center with pneumonia, bronchiolitis and polydactylism from September 2014 to July 2015.Results Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration of pneumonia group was 27.46±13.50 μ g / L,which was statistically different from control group.Similarly, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration of bronchiolitis group was 34.56±14.76 μg/L,which was significantly different from control group. The proportions of both vitamin D deficiency and insufficient in ALRI group were larger than control group.Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations of ALRI were significantly positively correlated with pediatric critical illness scores.Furthermore, genotype and allele gene frequencies of Fok1,Bsm1,Taq1 of vitamin D receptor gene were not significantly different between ALRI and control group. Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency and insufficient might affect the susceptibility and severity of ALRI for children. Moreover, there might not be an association between Fok1,Bsm1,Taq1 of VDR gene and ALRI for children.
