Objective:This research focused on exploring the clinical effectiveness of early electroacupuncture therapy in intensive care unit acquired-weakness(ICU-AW)patients with sepsis and mechanical ventilation. Methods:We recruited forty-five study patients in the ICU Dept of Jiangsu Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from December 2019 to January 2021.We randomly assigned 45patients by random number table method to control group(n=15),trial group 1(n=15)and trial group 2(n=15).All patients were accepted routine treatment. On this basis, patients in the trial group 1 were applied electroacupuncture therapy starting within 24 hours of mechanical ventilation,While patients in the trial group 2 were applied electroacupuncture therapy starting within 24-48 hours. The primary endpoint(the medical research council muscle strength score(MRC-Score),maximum inspiratory pressure(MIP),diaphragm activity, diaphragm thickness)and the secondary endpoint(APACHE Ⅱ score,Barthel index score, duration of mechanical ventilation,ICU stay,28-day survival rate)were recorded before and after the intervention. Results:A total of 44 patients completed the trial.(1)Compared with the control group, the MRC-Score in the trial group 1 was higher at d3,d7 and d14 after treatment(P<0.05)and the MRC-Score in trial group 2 was higher at d3 after treatment(P<0.05).Compared with the trial group 2,the MRC-Score in trial group 1 was higher at d7 and d14 after treatment(P<0.05).(3)After treatment, compared with the control group, duration of mechanical ventilation in trial group 1 and 2 was shorter(P<0.05).(4)After treatment, compared with the control group,Barthel index score in trial group 1 was significantly higher(P<0.01).Conclusion:Early electroacupuncture therapy can effectively improve the muscle strength of ICU-AW patients with sepsis and mechanical ventilation.Electroacupuncture therapy within 24 hours has a tendency of better than 24-48 hours. It is safe and feasible to treat ICU-AW in early stage by electroacupuncture.
