Objective: In most patients with Parkinson’s Disease(PD),motor symptoms usually start unilaterally.Despite the lateralization of brain function and the asymmetric damage of dopaminergic neurons,it is not clear whether different side-of-onset of PD will cause differences in symptoms. The sample size of the previous studies was very limited, and the conclusions were contradictory. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different side-of-onset on the symptoms of PD.Methods: A total of 494 PD patients with left side-of-onset(LOPD)and 492 PD patients with side-of-onset(ROPD)were recruited in this study.Hoehn and Yahr(H-Y)scale and the third part of Unified Parkinson’s disease rating scale(UPDRS-III)were used to assess the patients’ motor symptoms. The assessment of Non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease(NMSS),Mini-mental State Examination(MMSE),Montreal cognitive assessment(Mo CA),24-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD-24),Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire(PDQ-39),9-item Wearing-Off Questionnaire(WOQ-9),UPDRS-I,UPDRS-II,the REM behavior disorder screening questionnaire(RBDSQ),Parkinson’s disease sleep scale revised version(PDSS-2),the Sniffin’ Sticks 12-identification test(SS-12)were used to assess the patients’ non-motor symptoms.Compare the differences between the two groups of clinical data, motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms. Results: There were no significant differences in the clinical features, motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms between LOPD and ROPD(All P>0.05).Conclusions: The different side-of-onset has no effect on symptoms of PD.Same treatment and intervention can be taken for different side-of-onset PD patients.
