Ian McEwan is a contemporary British literary mogul, whereas, his recent work Solar has not gained the recognition it deserves. One of the reasons is that it is a new book, and another reason lies in its mixed reviews. Some critics even regard it as a mediocre. The current research is mainly limited to the analysis of the main characters and the theme.Detailed study on its irony.is always neglected. This paper makes an analysis of the employment and function of irony in Solar based on the theory of irony.Through a systematic study of the situational irony, verbal irony, dramatic irony, the irony of fate, this paper comes to the conclusion that the application of four kinds of irony in Solar shows Ian McEwan’s concern about human nature and his criticism towards the society.
