Being an Indian descendent,born in Trinidad and living in England,postcolonial writer V.S.Naipaul has a special life experience,which makes his identity the concentration of many critics.As for his representative work The Enigma of Arrival,the researches also focus on this theme,deeming that Naipaul’s enigma of arrival is the"enigma of the identity".Despite some researches on the style of work,the aim is still to locate his identity.The space-time structure is always neglected.This thesis is dedicated to exploring the space-time structure and the hidden meaning of The Enigma of Arrival by employing Bahktin’s Chronotope theory.On the basis of this,the Naipaulian chronotope is analyzed.It will be clear that in the aforementioned novel Naipaul constructs a meaningful chronotope characterized by spiraling movement and dialogic form,through which the laws of history and human development are mirrored and the way to conduct a meaningful life is pointed out. |
