Nowadays, the national defense construction has continuously put forward new requirements for the development of combined fleet’s comprehensive strength, and the fleet maintenance is an important factor to ensure the normal operation of the fleet. The United States Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual has great impetus to the maintenance and growth of the fleet in China.Meanwhile, the translation should be loyal to the original work to make sure that the translated text is accurate, informational and feasible to guide the practice. In view of this, under the guidance of shifts theory of Catford, this report proposes several translation strategies from the lexical and sentence levels, including level shifts(shifts of plural and singular form of countable nouns, shifts of verb tenses)and category shifts(structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts). The thesis specifically compares English-Chinese differences and conducts appropriate translation shifts to achieve textual equivalence. It is hoped that this research will provide feasible guidance and reference for the translation practice of EST.
