A Translation Report Of The Official Documents Assisted By SDL Trados

This paper is a report on a Chinese-English translation practice with the application of computer-assisted translation software.The translator chooses The Suggestions of the Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China on Earnest Study,Publicity and Implementation of the Spirit of 19^th National Congress of CPC as the source text.SDL Trados is chosen as the computer-aided translation tool in this practice,which could greatly improve the translation efficiency of such kind of texts.Before using SDL Trados,the translator analyzed the text,then established a termbase,translation memory and translation project after collecting and referring to a large number of parallel texts.While translating the project,the translator has also continuously revised and polished the translation results.During the process,the translator summarized the practical experience of computer-assisted translation and applied translation strategies such as amplification and omission to solve the problems in the translation and achieve accuracy and smoothness of the target text.After the translation,the translator compared the original text and the translation in detail,corrected some expressions and logical problems in this translation practice,and summarized the project.The report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the translation project including the source and analysis of the original text.It also introduces the features and advantages of the computer-assisted tool—SDL Trados used in this translation project.The second chapter presents the theoretical framework that guides this translation practice.In this translation,the translator uses Newmark’s semantic translation theory as guidance.This theory is mainly applied to the translation at the syntactic and lexical level.The third chapter elaborates the translation process which includes pre-translation preparation,in-translation modification and translation,and post-translation feedback.The fourth chapter is the case analysis,in which the translator suggests the appropriate translation strategies to solve the problems encountered in the translation process under the guidance of semantic translation theory.The last chapter is the summary of this report.In this translation practice,the translator has greatly improved the translation efficiency and quality by using SDL Trados.In addition,the translator has deepened her understanding of translation through the application of Newmark’s translation theory.
