A Report On The C-E Translation Of History And Culture Of Surnames(Excerpts)

With the continuation of globalization and further advancement of “ the Belt and Road ” Initiatives,the promotion and dissemination of Chinese culture are becoming more and more significant.Surname culture is an important part of Chinese culture.Translating surname culture into English is one of the important means for spreading Chinese traditional culture,which can help the foreigners learn more about the historical evolvement of Chinese surnames and then enhance their understanding of Chinese traditional culture.This translation practice report is based on the Chinese-English translation of History and Culture of Surnames.And the translation of source text aims to convey the special cultural content.In this translation practice report,the author describes the translation project according to the facts,including the preparation stage,the translation stage,the translation theory,the proofreading stage and the analysis of translation methods.In addition,under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,some concrete examples for discussing the application of Functional Equivalence Theory are presented during the process of translation from four aspects : theculture-loaded words,ancient Chinese,long and complicated sentences and non-subject sentences.In the process of translating the culture-loaded words(terms with Chinese characteristics such as,book titles,places’ name and official titles),methods of transliteration,literal translation,free translation and other methods and strategies were adopted;in the process of translating ancient Chinese Sentences,technique of addition,omission and conversion are mainly adopted;in the course of converting the long and complicated sentences with parataxis feature into hypotactic ones,the author focuses on the analysis of logical relationships and semantic cohesion,so the methods and strategies of division and reorganization are mainly used.When tackling the sentences without subjects,subject supplement method,“ there be”structure method and voice conversion method are mainly discussed.The content of this report also includes the purpose of translation,the analysis of source text,reflections and suggestions after the translation.With the purpose of analyzing and summarizing the translation techniques and methods of historical and cultural texts,the author hopes to offer some reference and suggestions for the similar translation in the future and also hopes to make some contributions to this field of translation.
