| English Curriculum Standards for High Schools(2017 edition)emphasizes the importance of students’ autonomy in English study.The students who the author teaches are from a rural high school in Guangdong Province.Students’ English foundation is weak and they are often passive in learning English so that their English self-learning ability needs to be improved.In this case,through the meta-cognitive strategies to cultivate students’ autonomy in English learning,students can manage themselves in the learning process.It helps to improve students’ ability to learn English independently.The experiment lasted for one semester by cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability through meta-cognitive strategies.The subject of the research is the students from two parallel classes of Grade Two in a high school of Guangdong Province.At the beginning of the semester,two classes took an examination and the result showed that there was no significant difference in the English level of the two classes.Class 7,Grade 2 applied the traditional teaching while Class 4,Grade 2 was selected as the experimental class and they applied the meta-cognitive strategy to cultivate their English autonomous learning.The author mainly discusses the four aspects of planning strategy training,monitoring strategy training,adjustment strategy training and evaluation strategy training in detail.After the experiment,from the comparative analysis of the questionnaires in the experimental class and the controlled class and the comparative analysis of the interview,the author found that most of the students in the experimental class can set clear goals and make plans and their self-monitoring ability is strengthened.According to the comparative analysis of the pre-test and post-test data,it can be found that improving the students’ English self-learning ability through meta-cognitive strategies can help improve the students’ English scores and the experimental class have higher scores than the controlled class.The results of this study showed that adopting the meta-cognitive strategy to cultivate students’ autonomy in English learning can enhance students’ self-planning,self-monitoring,self-regulation and self-evaluation skills during the learning process. |
