Reading plays a very important role in the process of language learning.It is not only the skill that students need to master,but also the main way of inputting target languages.Extensive reading can not only make individuals get profound knowledge,but also can play an irreplaceable role in language learning.However,through much investigation and research,it is found that the current situation of English reading in senior high schools of our country is not optimistic.High school students’ reading awareness is weak,reading habits have not been developed so far,and they have not really mastered reading methods and skills.At the same time,English reading classes in senior high schools in China tend to be exam oriented.Teachers often ignore students’ various interest and individual differences.English reading lessons only focus on the analysis of the language points and the structure of the texts,and pay little or even no attention to excavating the cultural connotation behind the articles.Generally speaking,senior high school students have less awareness of English reading,and their reading abilities need to be developed.English reading literacy needs to be improved.As a continuous,sufficient and independent reading method,sustained silent reading enables students to choose their own reading materials independently,and it lets students keep reading at a fixed time every day for a long time,which helps to stimulate students’ interest in English reading,cultivate good reading habits and improve reading abilities,cultivate students’ cross-cultural awareness,and consequently improve reading literacy.Through combing the literature of sustained silent reading at home and abroad and the English reading literacy,this study analyzes the existing problems in the current senior high school English reading teaching.Based on the input hypothesis theory,the theory of reading motivation and the theory of autonomous learning,the author selects two senior classes with the same basic English learning in a senior high school of the city as the objects of study in order to explore the three questions whether sustained silent reading can improve students’ English reading ability,cultivate students’ English reading habits and enrich students’ English reading experience.In more than four months,the students from the experimental class are taught to read in the way of sustained silent reading,while the control class adopt the traditional English teaching mode.Before and after the experiment,we use test paper of reading ability to compare the results of pretest and post test.At the same time,we also carry out questionnaire surveys,personal interviews and classroom observation so as to comprehensively observe the changes which have taken place in students’ English reading through sustained silent reading.Through the research,it is found that the sustained silent reading to some extent cultivates senior high school students’ English reading abilities,promotes them to develop good reading habits,and enriches the reading experience of senior high school students.As a practical teaching method,sustained silent reading is expected to have a certain guiding significance for the teaching of reading in and out of high school English class,so as to promote the renewal of teaching ideas. |
