| This thesis is based on the analysis of the author’s translation of The Unlikely Story of a Pig in the City,a children’s novel written by American novelist Jodi Kendall. The novel is characterized by its concise and vivid language, which conforms to the psychological features of children. Therefore, according to the features of children’s literature, the author uses reception aesthetics to solve the problems that occurred in the process of translating children’s literature. In the process of translation, the author encountered many problems. There were not only lexical problems such as the selection of word meanings and the translation of modal verbs, but also the translation of characterization, complex sentences and rhetorical devices. This thesis is intended to find the methods of translating words, syntax and rhetoric devices in children’s literature.First,on the lexical level, there are many words with rich meanings or without emotional colors in this novel. In the translation of these words, the author used amplification to extend the meanings of these words and to show their emotional implications,so as to make the children readers better understand the theme and characterization of the novel.Second,on the syntactic level, there are some short sentences with rich meanings and some complex sentences as well.In the translation of the short sentences with rich meanings, the author mainly used extension to make the language of the translated text sound more vivid and attractive. And in the translation of the complex sentences, the author mainly used conversion to make the translated text clearer and easier to read.Third,on the rhetorical level, there are such rhetorical devices as similes and hyperboles in this novel which make the novel more vivid and interesting to the children readers. In the translation of these rhetorical devices, the author mainly used literal translation to keep their original rhetorical effects and attract the children readers’ interests in reading. In addition to using the above translation methods, the author took into account children’s aesthetic standard, children’s horizon of expectation and cultural background and language features of the novel,so as to make the translated text better reflect the children readers’ daily life and attract the children readers’ interests in reading. |
