| Vocabulary as the basis of language learning plays an important role in self-taught English learning. As an important field in second language acquisition, incidental vocabulary acquisition has received extensive attention and research from domestic and foreign scholars. However, the effect of incidental vocabulary acquisition is related to many factors, and no widely recognized conclusion has been reached.Especially, the influence of cognitive style on incidental vocabulary acquisition has not been studied so far. This study explores the correlation between cognitive style and incidental vocabulary acquisition from the perspective of students’ cognitive style. It is expected to enrich the empirical research in this field and have practical guiding significance for self-taught English teaching.Based on the depth-of-processing hypothesis and the task involvement load hypothesis, this article uses quantitative analysis methods and cognitive style theory to study the incidental vocabulary acquisition of self-exam students in English reading. The main research is the following three questions:(1)What is the general situation in self-taught students’ cognitive styles?(2)What is the effect of different self-taught students’ cognitive styles on incidental vocabulary acquisition?(3)What is the effect of task involvement load for different cognitive students on IVA?This experiment conducted a one-month vocabulary incidental study on 52 students from two classes of a self-study station in Changsha. The students are divided into four parts according to the cognitive styles obtained by the group embedded figure test and the tasks completed with different inputs. The author uses the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale(VKS)to count students’ immediate and delayed acquisitions and uses SPSS software to perform independent sample T-test,correlation analysis, and one-way ANOVA on the results. The experimental results show that:(1)The overall cognitive style of self-taught students is field dependent.(2)Field independent students are better at incidental vocabulary acquisition and retention.(3)Task involvement load and cognitive style show a positive correlation in incidental vocabulary acquisition.Field independent students who completed the highest input task performed best in incidental vocabulary acquisition, but the effect was not obvious in the delayed test. This study proves the influence of cognitive style in the field of incidental vocabulary acquisition and provides theoretical and practical significance to self-taught English teaching. But there are still many limitations that need to be improved in future research. |
