On Aristotle’s Concept Of “Nature” | | Posted on:2021-08-22 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:J F Li | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2505306197452654 | Subject:Foreign philosophy | | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | | "Nature" is an important concept in Aristotle’s philosophy,philo sophers before Aristotle had different understandings of "nature".The students of the Ionian School regarded material things as the principle of everything in the world and considered them as nature and source of movement and change.Aristotle’s understanding of the concept is that nature is the causes and primary principle of moving and stilling in things themselves.Aristotle criticized these philosophers not to think about dynamic cause.Empedocles and Anaxagoras believe that there is no real change in life and death,and that they seek the nature and primary principle of things in elements.They explained the changing world,but they believed that the primary principle of things cannot move,Empedocles used "hate" and "love" as the driving force,and Anaxagoras used "Nous" as the driving force,but neither of them has conducted in-depth research on the driving force.Democritus also neglected the motivational force.Parmenides believes that "universe is one and unchanging",who denied the generation or change of the comos.According to Aristotle,if the generation does not exist,then the primary principle and dynamic causes of things cannot be there.Because Aristotle thought that the sense of being is manifold rather than "one",and a thing cannot be created from absolutely nothing.After solving the problems of generative change,Aristotle’s three principles of change were introduced.After these criticisms,Aristotle began to introduce his own concept of "nature".Nature is the inner source and cause of the movement and stillness of things themselves.Nature is the source and cause of the movement and stillness of things themselves.Further,nature is regarded as matter,form,generation,and nature is the teleology.Aristotle believed it is better to think form,rather than matter,is the nature.This doctrine was demonstrated in the discuss ion of the "Four Causes",Aristotle pointed out that the efficient cause,form cause,and final cause are unified into one.Except from these four reasons,both the luck and automatic causes are contingent.The nature we are discussing is due to the cause of the thing itself.The last important argument is Aristotle’s unique understanding of "natur e"."Nature" is the end.Aristotle’s doctrine of nature is an intern al teleology. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Nature, Change, Cause, Teleology, Aristotle, To on | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
