As a Latin vocabulary, sublime first appeared in the 1st century AD,but it was not discovered until the 16 th century on "On Sublime",and it was not until the 18 th century that the word was really focused on,and became the core category of aesthetics and literature. At the same time,we know that the 18 th century is an era of modernity and subjectivity. Therefore, when Schiller first understood the experience of tragedy as a sense of loftiness, this was highlighting the difference between him and Aristotle("Poetics"),about a modern self-concept(subjectivity)As a prerequisite for sublime to be established, and then understand the tragedy. In this group of ancient and modern comparisons,it is not just an aesthetic issue, but in fact different ancient and modern understandings of ethics and politics, and these understandings are also based on the emergence of self-concept.Therefore,as a famous contemporary thinker,Charles Taylor’s theory of modernity seems to be the best choice to explain this phenomenon. In "Roots of the Self",he used the clue of the development history of modern self as a clue to build a set for us Modern moral ontology. On the other hand, this article also wants to point out that as a thinker trying to justify the romanticism,Sublime has also become a key to Taylor’s complex thoughts.Charles Taylor’s thesis is very broad, covering ethics, politics, linguistics, and aesthetics. As a Western thinker who has received more attention in the domestic academic community, the academic community has often focused on its research in politics and ethics. With the publication of its "Secular Age" in recent years,it has begun to pay attention to his secularization theory. However, few scholars have mentioned Taylor’s philosophical anthropology, phenomenology, and linguistics.Based on this, the position of this article is that in his vast writings, there has always been an ontological theoretical appeal. In other words,if we want to really penetrate into the interior of Taylor’s thought,we need to understand from a perspective of ontological construction His philosophical anthropology, phenomenology and linguistics. And Taylor is based on a phenomenological ontology(what he calls solid realism),put forward his modern moral root theory, that is,moral ontology. The first chapter of this article mainly discusses the problem domain of Taylor’s thought. To explain why his theoretical form is so diverse that it seems to be unique in the contemporary era.The second chapter discusses the construction of Taylor’s modern moral ontology.Based on philosophical anthropology, phenomenology, and linguistics,he tried to solve the dilemma of dualism brought about by naturalism and scientism, and consolidate a ontology in the sense of phenomenology(solid realism). The foundation,a priori interpretation of the history of self-concept,depicting the three moral roots of modern moral conditions. That is to construct a set of moral ontology for modern society. The main discussion in Chapter 3 is Taylor’s secularization theory.Taylor uses his discussion of the moral roots of theism(one of the three moral roots)to prescribe his own antidote to modernity: saving through reenchantment Our desire for spiritual life.In the fourth chapter, this article compares the discussion of ancient and modern tragedies, raises the question of why sublime appeared in modern times, and asks itself based on Taylor ’s secularization theory: it is the emergence of modern self-concept that has swayed the whole The ethical status of human society, and let us understand the experience of tragedy as a sense of loftiness.Taylor understands the moral roots of romanticism and theism(the other is the moral roots of enlightenment)as the pursuit of spiritual life, higher meaning, and completeness in modern society.Moral behavior is closely connected,he is like Aristotle’s Catasis(purification)to inspire our moral behavior. In the sense of sublimeness,we experience a complete ascent, which partly responds to the sense of desolation after the absence of meaning after the emergence of the modern self. Therefore,Taylor’s modern moral root theory deeply reveals the modern ethical connotation of lofty concepts for us.At the same time, with the help of sublime,we obtained a key to enter Charles Taylor’s modernity thought...
