Motivation,as an important factor,has a great influence on English achievement of English learners.It has been widely concerned by scholars.In the past sixty years,L2 motivation has attracted many researchers to explore as a research focus in the field of motivation.Based on the previous L2 motivation theories,D?rnyei proposed L2 motivational self system theory,which is the reconstruction of L2 motivation theory.L2 motivational self system builds a new path for language learners to inspire their learning motivation.Nowadays,urban and rural education system has been integrated.Rural senior high school education is integrating into county and district senior high school education.Therefore,investigating the correlation between L2 motivational self system and English achievement of senior high school students in town is very important.Especially investigating differences of three dimensions of L2 motivational self system between students form rural area and those from town,and investigating the relation between three dimensions of L2 motivational self system and English achievement of those students have a broad practical value.Moreover,it can help us grasp the basic situation of L2 self motivational system of senior high school students as well as be aware of the level and differences of L2 self motivational system between students from town and those from rural area.Teachers’ ability can also be improved by teaching students according to their aptitude.And then students’ English learning motivation can be stimulated and finally their English learning achievement will be better achieved.The correlation between L2 motivational self system and English achievement of senior high school students in Funing town was investigated.Specifically,the following three aspects are discussed.The first one is the overall situation of L2 motivational self system of senior high school students in town.The second one is whether L2 motivational self system is related to the English achievement of senior high school students in town.The third one is whether there are differences of L2 motivational self system between students from town and that from rural area,if so,how L2 motivational self system of students from town and rural area is related to their English achievement.The method of quantitative and qualitative study is adopted in the research.And 431 senior high school students in Funing town are selected as research objects.A questionnaire and a standardized English test were conducted.The research data was analyzed by the social science statistical software SPSS 25.0.Related processing includes descriptive statistics,independent T-test,and Pearson correlation analysis.Five urban students and five rural students were selected for interviews.The results of the study show that:(1)L2 motivational self exists in the English learning of senior high school students in town and is at a high level.The ideal L2 self has the highest level,followed by the L2 learning experience,and ought-to L2 self has the least level.(2)There is a positive correlation between the L2 motivational self system and English achievement of senior high schools students in town.The ideal L2 self and L2 learning experience are positively correlated with English achievement.However,there is no correlation between ought-to L2 self and English achievement.(3)There is a significant difference in L2 motivational self system between students from town and rural area.And there is a conspicuous difference in ought-to L2 self and L2 learning experience between students from town and rural area.However,ideal L2 self of students from town and rural area does not have a significant difference.Based on the research result,suggestions are put forward for English teaching.In order to promote students’ L2 motivational self system level,teachers should focus on inspiring students’ ideal L2 self,creating positive L2 learning experience,and guiding students to develop proper ought-to L2 self.In addition,the gap between students form town and students from rural area on English learning can be narrowed down by means of teaching them according to their aptitudes and create a good L2 learning experience.Therefore,English learning motivation of all senior high school students in town can be improved and their English achievement can be achieved.
