"Lin quan Gao zhi"("The Lofty Message of Forest and Streams "),a prominent theoretical treatise on Chinese landscape painting authored by Guo Xi,further distilled art making view, function view and values of Chinese landscape painting by integrating theory with practice by organizing and expounding on previous landscape painting theories and techniques. In this book,Guo Xi proposed the landscape painting conception theory featuring the observation method of "looking from afar",which can exhaust all the features of an objective and real natural landscape, including contour, topography and texture of rocks, from multiple angles:layers and dimensions,to achieve a graphical representation beyond normal human vision when painting a landscape painting and enable the painting style of reproducing natural landscape objectively and integrally in the Northern Song Dynasty exerting a great influence and impact on the conceptions and aesthetic values of landscape painting from the Song Dynasty to the pres ent. This paper conducts a.study of the theory of the observation method "looking from afar"proposed in "Lin quan Gao zhi",and explores how this conception theory is presented in the patterns and ink drawing techniques of the landscape paintings in this period by sorting and analyzing repres entative landscape painters in the Northern Song Dynasty and their works, and hereby discusses the composition, aesthetic taste, implications, cultural character and value orientation of the conception of landscape painting in the Northern Song Dynasty. Therefore, this paper will discuss it in the following five chapters:Chapter one starts with an exposition of the historical causes behind the formation of the term "looking from afar" and its developments.Guo Xi improved the observation method of"looking from afar" into a landscape painting conception theory by systematizing painting theories proposed by scholars in previous dynasties and integrating them with his own painting experience, which is of great significance to the developm ent of Chinese landscape painting.Chapter two expounds on the manifestations of observation method of "being from afar"in the artistic conception of a landscape painter by analyzing the characteristics of the artistic conception of" selfless state" in the Northern Song landscape painting and the values of "the ambition of forest and streams".Chapter three focuses on analyzing the abundant and diverse ink landscape painting conceptions and green landscape painting conceptions presented by different artists since the early, mid and late Northern Song Dynasty hrough exemplification and argumentation, this chapter explores the concrete presentation of the observation method of "looking from afar"in ink drawing technique and style of the Northern Song landscape paintings in terms of graphical representation, ink drawing technique and other languages.Chapter four discusses the aesthetic spirit presented by the observation method of "looking from afar" in landscape paintings of the Narthern Song Dynasty and claims that this aesthetic spirit can offer contemporary landscape painting a valuable reference and lesson and is still of great significance to landscape painting of today in the new era.Chapter five takes a landscape painting of the author as an example to elaborate on the use and practice of the observation theory of looking from afar in his work and his reflections on art making. This work combines the observation theory of looking from afar presented in the landscape paintings in the Northern Song Dynasty with a graphical representation and ink drawing technique strongly signifying modern composition.and it painted an image with formal and artistic heauty while absorbing tradtional learning. Thus, this pamper argues:The observation theory of "looking from afar "proposed in" Lin quan Gao zhi" written by Guo Xi in the Northern Song Dynasty is a presentation of conception, composition and other aspects of landscape painting in the Northern Song Dynasty more importantly,it offers vahiable reference to landscape painting at present and is worth inheriting by later generations. |
