The Song of the Lark is the third novel of Willa Cather who is an outstanding American woman writer. The novel mainly focuses on the growth story of the heroine,Thea Kronborg, from a small-town girl to a famous opera singer. This thesis focuses on the combats in various spaces in the novel.Through the detailed and exhaustive description of the growth process of Thea, the novel reflects the author’s reflection about humans’ living space. The living space of Thea,a small-town girl, can not fulfill her art dream. She must strive to realize her dream. She must not only break through the restrictions in living, working, and studying space, but also face all kinds of inequalities in social space, such as gender discrimination and class inequality. Finally, she must break through her self-doubt,confusion in psychological space to persist in pursuing the initiation of living space. This thesis mainly focuses on the combats in various spaces in this book. The novel, through the life experience of the heroes, reveals Willa Cather’s reflection about humans’ survival problems, that is,although humans must experience confusion periods in psychological space, confinements in physical space, and inequalities in social space, they can persist in combating.Their persistence in psychological space will help them go through confusion periods in psychological space, get through confinements in physical space, and inequalities in social space. After a series of combats in various spaces, they finally realize the space shift and complete the initiation of living space at the same time. The thesis is composed of five parts. The introduction consists of the introduction to Willa Cather and her The Song of The Lark, the literature review, space theory, and the organization of the thesis.Chapter one mainly focuses on the combat in physical space, which includes confinement in living space, studying and working space, and their combat against these confinements. In chapter two,the combat in social space mainly contains the inequalities in gender space and class space and the combat against these inequalities. The third chapter mainly emphasizesthe confusion, persistence, and epiphany in psychological space. The conclusion mainly illustrates the major findings, the limitations of the research, and the suggestions for future research.
