Reading is the main content of senior high school English teaching and it is also the main way for students to acquire extracurricular knowledge.Reading is not only a prerequisite for students to improve their speaking,listening and writing skills but also an important channel for them to learn knowledge,accumulate vocabularies and master sentence patterns.With the development of new curriculum reform,the proportion of reading in the college entrance examination has become larger,and the requirements for students’ reading ability are getting higher and higher.Therefore,improving students’ reading ability and achievements has become the common concern of front-line teachers.However,due to the influence of traditional teaching methods and test-oriented education,the whole situation of English reading in senior high school is not optimistic.So teachers need to use an appropriate theory to guide English reading teaching.Schema theory believes that reading is a process in which readers actively participate in and decode language.Only when the readers combine the existing knowledge and experience with the reading materials can they better understand the text.Under the guidance of schema theory,teachers help students to activate,establish and consolidate the knowledge of schema in reading teaching,which helps them overcome the difficulties encountered in reading and ultimately achieve the purpose of improving English reading abilities and achievements.The research is based on the schema theory and reading theory,100 students of senior one in the Second Experimental Senior High School of Bijie are selected as the research participants who are regarded as the experimental class and the control class.The teaching experiment lasts four month.The researcher uses questionnaires and interviews to investigate the status and changes of students’ English learning and analyzes how to apply the theory to English reading through case analysis.Finally the pre-test and post-test results will be analyzed and compared.The experimental results show that the reading teaching under the guidance of schema theory can not only improve the reading abilities and achievements of students but also help to cultivate their reading interest.
