The frequent exchanges in the medical field between China and foreign countries have significantly stimulated the demand for medical translation.Nevertheless, the traditional translation mode can no longer meet the need of current translation. The application of computer-aided technology can ensure the efficiency and quality of translation.Apart from this, many translation companies also require translators to be proficient in using computer-aided translation(CAT)software, and thus it’s an irresistible trend for a translator to use it.Hence, this report introduces the role of CAT software,SDL Trados,in medical translation. The book,Clinical Trials in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis,is a typical text of medical science, which focuses on the design and management of the clinical trials in Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA)and Osteoarthritis(OA).The translation team used SDL Trados to assist the translation of the book, and Chapter 17 and 18 were translated by the author. It includes genetics and pharmacogenetics that applied to these diseases and economic evaluation for new biologics.Hence, there are many drugs, organizations, names, terms and tables,as well as long and complicated sentences, representing the difficult points in the translation process. In view of this,a load of preparation work should be done prior to translation, such as searching relevant corpus to find parallel texts, establishing the translation memory bank, extracting terms and compiling glossary.Notably, translation memory bank and termbase make the repetitive contents easier to translate and improve the efficiency while applying Trados. In the post-edition,the translator added conjunctive words and replaced synonyms in the target text, thereby guaranteeing its smoothness and highquality. After the translation was finished, translation memory and termbase in this project were collected. Therefore, when translated these types of texts again, the translator can reuse the language resources to save the time and cost to find relevant information. At last, the author summarizes the experience and implications gained from this translation practice.Although CAT software can improve the translation efficiency, the translator should master how to use it and how to find online resources. It is hoped that the thesis would inspire those focusing on the study of medical translation and the use of CAT software.
