| With the "Go global" trend of Chinese culture,the translation and introduction of The Peony Pavilion which has precious cultural value,has attracted the attention of many scholars at home and abroad..These scholars can be roughly divided into two camps:Western sinologists and domestic translators.Therefore,the author chooses two representative translators from two camps,Birch,a sinologist,and Wang Rongpei,a domestic translator.There are a lot of allusions in The Peony Pavilion,which are short but full of cultural connotations and bring many challenges to the translation.Scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of researches on the translation of The Peony Pavilion from different perspectives,but almost no one has ever made a comparative study of allusions translation in The Peony Pavilion from the perspective of eco-translatology.Therefore,the theory of eco-translatology and the allusion translation are combined and the translation of allusions in The Peony Pavilion are analysed in order to guide the translation of allusions with the theory of eco-translatology.Based on the theory of eco-translatology,the translation of allusions in The Peony Pavilion of two English versions by Wang Rongpei and Cyril Birch are studied.In the main part,the translational eco-environment that influences the two translators’translation,including the translator ability,target readers,translator intention and social environment is discussed.After that,the allusions in The Peony Pavilion and their translation in the two versions are collected,judgments on the degree of the three-dimensional transformation of these translations are made,and the translation strategies and methods used by the two translators in translating these allusions are briefly analyzed.The translation of some allusions are chosen as examples and some detailed comparisons between the two translators from the perspective of three-dimensional transformation are made.From the perspective of three-dimensional transformation of eco-translatology,a comparative study of the translation of allusions in the two English versions of The Peony Pavilion is made by the author,and the different translation strategies and methods used by the two translators in three dimensions are summed up.In the linguistic dimension,Wang Rongpei,who mostly uses free translation,can make better adaptive selection and transformation of the linguistic dimension;in the cultural dimension,Birch,who flexibly uses annotations,can achieve better adaptive selection and transformation of cultural dimension than Wang Rongpei;in the communicative dimension,the translation strategies and methods used by the two translators are different,but both of them achieves the communicative dimension. |
