| In recent years,unceasing progress of interdisciplinary research has been made between linguistics and other academic disciplines,and more scholars begin to focus on how to utilize the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of cognitive linguistics to analyze political discourses than ever.Since President Xi takes his office,there are already a large number of researches on both his speeches and his works,but proportionally,the metaphor research on his speech is still in an initial stage.This thesis intends to do deeper levels of analysis on metaphors in his speeches,which is based on the most authoritative corpus,"Corpus of Xi’s Serial Important Speeches",set up by People.cn.Moreover,this thesis tries to categorize and summarize main types of concept metaphors in his political discourses with the help of the analysis.Finally,this thesis tries to comprehend and explain metaphors in his speeches according to China’s social backgrounds and cultural traditions.The thesis consists of three chapters except introduction and conclusion.Basically,the linguistic materials in this study mainly come from the aforementioned authoritative corpus,including but not limited to economy,politics,culture,society and environment.The study is based on the three sorts of main overlapping categories of Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff and Johnson,which are structural metaphor,ontological metaphor,and orientational metaphor.After the study of the thesis,the author believes that it’s safe to draw the following conclusions.Firstly,the three main categories of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory are widely used in the speeches of President Xi,and the number of structural metaphors is larger than the numbers of ontological metaphor and orientational metaphor.Secondly,the analysis finds out that using conceptual metaphors in the political discourses properly can improve the comprehension of the audience effectively,which will result in favorable social effects.Thirdly,the overlap and the ubiquity of the conceptual metaphor provide support for interdisciplinary studies(including political discourses)from multiple angles,and its research value still remains to be discovered.Finally,the author believes that through the analysis of the examples exhibited in the thesis,the understanding of the ideologies of President Xi will be promoted.At present,rapid international and domestic changes demand us to be able to take the firm stand and hold fast the direction of development to make further progress in realizing the China Dream.Studies on President Xi’s speeches provide a preeminent way to make thorough comprehension of both his thought and ideology,which will certainly help us to improve our thinking and understanding.At the same time,the study may provide a new method to do research on political discourses and a new vision to encourage academic innovation. |
