| Most of the instruments used in Chinese orchestras are derived from traditional Chinese solo instruments also known as folk instruments. When these instruments originally used for solo are introduced into modern Chinese orchestras and ensembles, how could they adapt their original playing techniques and styles to the application in the orchestra is an important issue that all orchestra players, orchestra conductors and even composers need to pay attention to.Solo instruments playing tends to be outstanding with strong individual character style, thus able to interpret and play freely, not bounded by ensemble whereas an ensemble with multiple instruments requires a lot of cohesive collaborations in the balancing of dynamics, pitching and tone qualities, which is different from that of a solo instrument. This is a major focus in the study of different playing techniques of each wind instrument. There are other aspects that need to be studied, such as:what are the different playing techniques used between a soloist and an accompanist? What are the different performing techniques or playing styles between a duo of wind instruments(such as suona and dizi)and with an ensemble of a few other instruments(such as erhu and ruan?)In short, these are the problems which falls under the scope of "Instrumentation" and "orchestration".These are the new topics for the conductors in orchestra conducting profession to re-examine and further study.According to the author’s experiences in performance practices in the Singapore Chinese orchestra and artistic practice as a conductor in many orchestras over the years,it is considered that among all the of instruments that are used in the Chinese orchestras, the most prominent problem of the adaptation of the Chinese wind instruments in the ensemble or an orchestra are the loudness as in dynamic range and their distinct timbre. Therefore, the adaptability of these Chinese wind instruments performing techniques is deeply discussed and studied. |
