This report is based on the author’s practice of translating academic papers. The source texts are two papers from the research project Analysis of faculty stressors and their relations to teacher efficacy and well-being in the Chinese mainland based on job demand-resources model. These two papers represent the latest findings of the project. One explores faculty-perceived stressors and their relationships with teacher efficacy, engagement and teaching satisfaction in the Chinese mainland. The other tests the application of the job demands-resource model on university teachers in the Chinese mainland and investigates the relationship between the job characteristics of university teaching and teachers’ well-being.The author has encountered lots of translation problems during the translation process. In this report, the author will illustrate with specific examples how she has solved these problems and accomplished the translation task with the help of the translation strategies put forward by John Catford.Translation examples are provided for analysis in two aspects:level shifts and category shifts.Based on these specific examples, the author has summarized practical translation methods. The author has dealt with level shifts mainly in plural forms, tenses and aspects, while category shifts in structure shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts. This translation practice has proved the guiding function of Catford’s translation shift ideas in solving translation problems in interlingual transfer and provides a new perspective for researches on the translation of academic papers.
