With increasingly strengthened innovation, the popularization of science has become an indispensable part of social development and progress.People's demand for popular science texts has gradually risen, and the demand for translation of popular science texts has consequently increased.Meanwhile,as a vital carrier of science popularization, popular science texts are characterized by the coexistence of rigor and popularity and high frequency of long and complex sentences, which bring difficulties to relevant translation. The popular science book Decoding Your Cat,jointly written by certified physicians of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists,is selected as the source text of this translation practice, taking the pet-themed popular science text of mass appeal as a focus. The main content of the source text covers the behavioral characteristics of cats of all ages, scientifically analyzes specific cases, and provides readers with solutions. The source text has the linguistic characteristics of popular science text—scientific and vivid, and there are numerous long and complex sentences, thus causing problems such as misalignment of information and structure during translation. Therefore, the translator chooses Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory as a guide to translating long and complex sentences with corresponding methods, namely sequencing, amplification, splitting, reversing, and comprehensive translation. The translator strives to convey the content of long and complex sentences accurately and fluently so that the target language readers can obtain the most equivalent content and feelings of the source language readers and deliver the latest and most scientific pet behavior information. This translation practice can deepen the translator's understanding and application of translation theories and methods and also improve translation ability. It also provides examples and references for the translation and study of popular science texts.
