| Water Death is a novel published by Kenzaburo Oe in 2009,and it is also a novel "rewritten" in his later years.Water Death tells the story of the protagonist Gu Yi,in order to explore the real reason of his father’s death,returning to his hometown ten years after his mother’s death to start writing the "water death novel" which had been interrupted several decades ago,and publicly showing the creation process of the novel in the novel.In the process of exploring the real cause of his father’s "water death",the government began to excavate the spirit of The Times in his father,ancient Yi,ancient Yaozi,Rhubarb and other relevant figures through the theatrical performances of the Caveman troupe.As a literary theory originated from the West,meta-fiction is usually regarded as a kind of post-modernism literature,which is in opposition to traditional realism literature.Meta-fiction is "fiction about fiction".It is a literary genre that takes fiction as the means,takes literary creation itself as the theme,openly discusses the theory and practice of fiction in novels,consciously exposes fiction and human nature of novels,and guides people to think about the fundamental relationship between fiction text and the real world.Dajiang’s novels in his later years,especially many of his works since the new century,contain the characteristics of meta-novels obviously.In the process of studying the novel Water Death,the author found that the formation of Water Death and the application of the meta-novel were mutually complementary.First of all,this paper will take The novel Water Death by Oe Jianzang as the text,and on the premise of macro controlling the literary characteristics of The new century,discuss the meaning of the novel Water Death,that is,complete the novel creation in the process of exploring the truth of his father’s death.Secondly,it explains the relevant theoretical knowledge supporting the meta-novel constructed in Water Death,including what is meta-novel,the development of meta-novel theory,basic features and common classification of narrative strategies.Finally,it focuses on how water Death,as a novel,is constructed step by step under the guidance of meta-novel narrative strategies,what purposes it achieves by using meta-novel narrative strategies,and what thematic meanings the work expresses inside and outside the text.Water Death,by Kenzaburo Oe,is a review and reflection of an octogenarian’s creative life,as well as his multidimensional reflections on Japan’s social history,politics,education and humanity.Water Death not only inherits the traditional literary background from Oriental Japan,but also absorbs the western literary theories,which is also a great embodiment of Dajiang’s placing the contemporary Japanese literature in the world cultural context. |
