| Under the current background of the increasingly frequent international academic exchanges,the researchers need to have the ability to convey ideas through academic papers and express their stance reasonably,and the interpersonal function of the academic discourse is increasingly prominent;however,due to the limitation of linguistic competence and the scientific research experience,EFL learners in China still have room for improvement in their ability to express stance reasonably in academic papers.This research focuses on two types of academic papers,the theses written by Chinese postgraduates majoring in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics,and the articles published in the international academic journals.It explores the distribution characteristics of stance markers and analyzes the interpersonal and pragmatic functions of stance markers in academic discourse.The purpose is to enlighten the EFL learners represented by Chinese postgraduates in this study to improve their ability to express academic stance internationally.This research employs the stance marker classification model proposed by Hyland(2005b)as the theoretical framework and selects a total of 40 papers of two types of academic discourse.Two small corpora were established with a total of 220,645 words,respectively named Chinese Theses Corpus(abbreviated as CTC)and International Journals Corpus(abbreviated as IJC).With the help of research tools including Microsoft Word(2019),Ant Conc(3.5.8),and SPSS 26,the distribution characteristics of stance markers in the above two corpora and eight sub-corpora composed of the abstracts,introductions,discussions,and conclusions are descriptively analyzed.According to the research findings,the standard frequency(the frequency per thousand words)of stance markers in IJC is generally significantly higher than the standard frequency in CTC.The different types of stance markers and the characteristics of different components of the academic papers will affect the distribution characteristics of stance markers.The standard frequencies of hedges and boosters in both CTC and IJC are ranked in the top two places.In terms of the main components of the academic papers,the standard frequencies of stance markers in discussions and conclusions are significantly higher than those in other parts.The interpersonal function of stance markers is conducive to the interpersonal interaction between the authors and the readers,thereby promoting the reasonable expression of academic stance and the promotion of academic views;the pragmatic function of stance markers is dedicated to maintaining the face of the authors and the potential readers through avoiding unnecessary face-threatening behaviors,which will promote academic exchanges by maintaining a good relationship between the authors and the readers.This research has a certain positive effect in promoting the reasonable stance expression of Chinese postgraduates majoring in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics in English academic writing,and it will provide some references for the teaching of English academic writing to a certain extent.Meanwhile,the international publication of academic papers needs the reasonable and accurate stance expression as well. |
