Abstract/Summary:
The conjunction "he" is a frequently used word.It is also a primary grammatical item for second language learners. However,we can still find many errors of conjunction"he" in the compositions of senior Malaysian students, and the types of errors are typical. This paper introduces the Feature Assembly Hypothesis as the theoretical basis of the research.Based on the ontological study of the conjunction "he" and the comparative analysis of the Chinese conjunction "he" and the Malay conjunction "dan",this paper summarizes the similarities and differences of the features, and classifies and explores the related errors of the conjunction "he" in Malaysian learners’ composition corpus according to the extracted features. We designed a questionnaire based on the extracted features and the error corpus of Malaysian students, then analyzed the data collected in the questionnaire, discussed the survey results according to the whole test and different types of tests, and explored the feature assembly in the process of Malaysian learners’ acquisition of Chinese conjunction "he".The results show that:(1)Malaysian students will map the features of Malay "dan"to Chinese "he" such as the[+consistent]feature which is the same feature in the two languages but different ways of implementation;the[+connect clause/sentence]feature and[+mandatory]feature of Malay"dan" which are different from the features assembled by Chinese "he",will be mapped to Chinese "he";the Chinese conjunction"he" needs to assemble the feature set of[-bare][+disyllabic][+written]when connecting verbs or adjectives, while the Malay "dan" has no such restriction. Some Malaysian students directly correspond the feature of the conjunction "dan" to the Chinese conjunction "he" without assembling the feature set of[-bare][+disyllabic][+written];(2)Within the scope of the survey,we found that Malaysian learners can successfully reassemble some features of Chinese "he":[-connect clause/sentence]feature,[+consistent]feature,[-mandatory]feature,but the subjects failed to achieve the performance similar to Chinese native speakers in the feature set of[-bare][+disyllabic][+written];(3)according to the survey, the order of feature assembly is:[-connect clause/sentence],[+consistent],[-mandatory],[-bare][+disyllabic][+written]feature set;(4)from the score of each feature, the assembly of the feature set([-bare][+disyllabic][+written])is more difficult than reassembling single feature,so we think that the more features need to be reassembled,,relatively speaking, the more difficult in acquisition it is.Finally, from the existing survey results, combined with the common errors of Malaysian students’ composition corpus,we also provide some teaching suggestions. For example,we should pay attention to the primary grammar item of conjunction "he"in teaching.According to the students’ Chinese level,we should carry out targeted teaching in stages. There may be some possible limitations in this study.Due to my limited level, the questionnaire may have some defects. The sample size is too small, and the sample size of each group is not balanced, which may have a certain impact on the research results.
