Subtitle Translation Strategies For Talk Shows From The Perspective Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

Globalization and cross-border communication have made the translation of cultural products flourish.As a major vehicle of cultural communication,talk shows serve as a window for the young to understand the world.The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,an American news satire TV program,is packed with spicy satire and hard-to-translate cultural message,and is hugely popular among young people.This thesis takes the multimodal discourse analysis as the theoretical base to study subtitling strategies in the American talk show The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.Multimodal discourse analysis not only studies the text,but analyzes various senses including hearing,vision and touch.These senses communicate through semiotic resources such as language,images,sounds and movements,which interact in subtitling.In light of the synthetic theoretical framework for multimodal discourse analysis proposed by Zhang Delu,this study categorizes the subtitles based on the modality relation and two relations are summarized,the enhancement and the non-enhancement.The research then summarizes the subtitling strategies and offers explanations with examples in the case study.This thesis finds that literal translation is the major choice for the enhancement relation and free translation for the non-enhancement.Moreover,free translation is essential for both cases.Translators are advised to combine visual modes and subtitles and achieve consistency between the two so that the humor of talk shows can be better conveyed and audience can gain a better viewing experience.The thesis looks at the modality relation and subtitling strategies for talk shows.Hopefully,the finding can contribute to the introduction of great talk shows with quality subtitles.
